It is the seventh such indictment that France gets at Strasbourg regarding illegal retention of Basque prisoners.
The high European tribunal decreed that the French Republic must pay €5000 to each of the victims and other €2000 as fine for unduly delaying the liberation of Basque prisoners Patxi Abad and Mikel Almandoz.
Both were kept in provisional detention for almost six years before they were brought to trial. The European Convention of Human Rights, of compulsory application in all European states (incl. Turkey and the Transcaucasus), except Belarus, establishes that every person has the right to be judged in a reasonable time or set free.
